Swansboro, NC

Swansboro’s roots trace back to around 1730, when settlers established a community on the site of a former Algonquin village. In 1783, the town was officially incorporated as “Swannsborough” in honor of Samuel Swann, a prominent North Carolina legislator. The town flourished as a shipbuilding center, with Captain Otway Burns constructing the Prometheus, the first steamboat built in North Carolina, in 1818. Swansboro’s maritime legacy continues to shape its identity, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.
